Letter From Luxembourg:
Ashcroft's Ad Hoc Bull

FEBRUARY 5, 2001. I am a foreign politics editor at "Tageblatt," Luxembourg's second largest daily. We are a Social-Democrat newspaper that has always been in favor of equal rights for gays and lesbians. As such, we welcomed President Clinton's decision to nominate Mr. Hormel as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg.

Our conservative Catholic competitor "Luxemburger Wort" strongly disliked Mr. Hormel's orientation, but they didn't let it be known, as they avoid criticizing the U.S. administration altogether. The overwhelming majority of the people over here did not have any problem with Mr. Hormel.

There is no political party or extreme-right movement in Luxembourg that advocates discrimination against gays and lesbians. When Ashcroft described us as "Europe's most Catholic country" it sounded to me like ad-hoc bullshit. Of course almost all people are baptized, but as in most other Western European countries, most Luxembourger parishes could hold their Sunday masses in a telephone booth as far as the size of their attendance is concerned.

The atmosphere over here is clearly not as biased as some U.S. bigots would like it to be. In fact, it is quite funny that U.S. fundamentalists suddenly discover a sympathy for Catholics when they think it might help them bashing gays.

Friendly greetings from Luxembourg,

Francis Wagner
