JUNE 1, 2005. Augusto Pinochet was 58, the same age as George W. Bush, when he oversaw the torture and murder of thousands in Chile after his 1973 coup. A disapproving world caught up with him some 30 years later during a routine trip to London to visit his doctor.

Now, claims of 'senile dementia' are almost all that stand between him and jail in newly democratic Chile. Even the once reverential Chilean military shuns him.

According to Amnesty International, American leaders may eventually face a similar fate for the torture and killing of prisoners in Guantánamo ("the gulag of our times"), Iraq and Afghanistan.
